Grouted, by God !
( another harrowing trial -imagine spreading liquid sh*t across the favorite new thing you've just spent a lot of $ and work on ! )
The arena where I must strive.
1/4 " hardieboard on floor. Z put up cement board on wall.
Tumbled travertine tiles applied with thinset ... a terrifying ordeal.
Here is the AMAZING match that Lucy and I found after the nicest young man went thru huge piles of scraps at a local stone place...
It is a stone shelf, 1.25 " thick, 5 " wide and 34" long. It will go across the tiled area at 6' high and be a mantel, of sorts, above the wood stove. The sample tiles I have shown here have been treated with sealer to show how the tiles will look when the project is completed.
The kind man said he thought this is limestone, but it is a dead ringer for some of these travertine marble tiles.
Here is the general idea for this area, though it has changed as things went on. Lost my darling old stove...too old to repair ! VT. castings do not make the inner parts for these anymore :o(
The gap at 6' high is for the stone shelf I want to put in.Tiles will go all the way to ceiling.
Tiling about half done. The floor tiles have been sealed and 'enhanced'.
New stove ! And all tiled, ready to grout til I drop. I was ready to do this yesterday, but ran out of grout !
This is what it looked like with grout smeared on, before cleaning exess off the tiles.
Ta DA ! All done after 4 + hours of grouting. The lower center, below the stovepipe, is lighter in color because it was grouted the day before and has dried completely.
Close up of the top part, showing the gap where the beautiful stone shelf will go and the spaces for the two wooden brackets that Zoltan is making, he'll bring them and install them tomorrow. In 2 days I can apply the sealer/enhancer to the whole thing and it will be done !
Stella has had it up to here with this tiling crap ! No decent walk for 3 days.... this is a dog in despair !
